With these maps in hand and these gaps in mind, I came to the conclusion that we would need to engage in the impossible task of re-engineering the organizations and institutions that could accommodate us.
What had eluded me all these years had been sitting right under my nose all along. And it all came together in the last few months of my Encore Fellowship in San José, where we were building a mentoring program for underserved high school age youth.
It took the coronavirus pandemic of 2020 to be the catalyst. Sheltering at home had forced me to move online, and once there we happened upon an unexpected innovation. Zoom, it turns out, is very well suited for mentoring. I soon discovered that mentoring remotely could be as good, if not better than getting together in person. And I discovered that there is no better way to enter into more long-lasting mentoring relationships than to start out in groups.
In many ways I had gone full circle. My own career involved getting the generations together in school. I now was doing the same thing, but online.
